Tascam DR-40 Portable Recorder Overview

Tascam DR-40 Portable Recorder Overview by GAK
The Tascam DR-40 is a compact portable recorder with built-in condensor microphones which are adjustable to XY or AB positions. Using XLR / 1/4" mic/line input (Phantom Power) the Tascam DR-40 can also be turned in to a four-track recorder by using both the built-in microphones and another mic. Another great features of the DR-40 Portable Recorder is Overdub mode which allows you to record audio whilst playing a previous recording.

It is too early for me to comment with a detailed pros and cons just yet but I can say that this recorder is excellent quality. By quality I refer to the unit itself. I have made a few recordings with the DR-40 using the built in microphones along with my Shotgun mic. These were imported into my DAW in .wav format and sounded great. Being a composer and musician (Trumpet player) I like to record musical instruments and import these along side of a rhythm come chord track. Incidentally my constructed DAW chord tracks can also be imported to the DR-40 in either .wav or MP3 format, so if I'm out and about I can listen to them. All in all the quality of the built in mics are good and seem very sensitive. The only bug I find using the built in mics is that you need to be very careful handling the unit while recording because the DR-40 pics up vibrations from the hand/clothing etc so it is best to seat the unit rather than hold it. There is a rubber foot supplied for this reason. Having said that I used my Shotgun on a boom and this allowed me to walk around while recording. Enough said there because I normally would not be walking around. Perhaps if someone purchased this to make outdoor recordings they would need to consider this. Whilst I record mainly in my studio with pro equipment I need a small unit to carry around with me so that I can record my students performing. The DR-40 meets all of my requirements so far in one small unit! It is easy to use but if you consider purchasing this unit I wholeheartedly recommend that you read in full the user manual in particular the recording section. I hope this is helpful and like I said I've only just purchased my DR-40 .... so far so good. thanks to GAK too great service.
